I just watched the treatment of _The Gold Rush_ on the AFI 100 special, and what's with Woody? Granted it's a short interview, and he's not commenting on Chaplin's talkies, but praise for Charlie from Woody seems new to me.

Thank goodness they used the 1942 print for scenes.

Perhaps Woody's comments about CC are to some extent influenced by the prevailing climate of opinion. Overall, the assessment of CC and his work has taken a positive turn in the past 15 years. I'm sure Woody is not oblivious to this. The criticisms he's made of CC's work were pretty standard comments in the '60s and '70s.

And maybe, too, he's taken another look. We all know how much difference that can make.
