According to DVD Talk Forum, Charles Chaplin's THE COUNTESS FROM HONG KONG (1967) is scheduled for a Feb. 4 DVD release by Universal. No word about extras. Hopefully this will *not* have the same video transfer as the VHS release of a couple of years ago!

Agreed. While the film was not produced in a 'scope' anamorphic format (as the David Robinson book for example, states) the film does need to be letterboxed due to the fact that it was 'hardmatted' in the camera. You can tell in the existing VHS video that the compositions are all thrown off by the image being blown-up 'to fill this screen', resulting in cutoff on the sides.

Also, the VHS was the shorter US release version, wasn't it? (So far, I've only been able to locate the longer version with the German dubbed soundtrack, taped off TV several years ago.) Given that (and maybe even the possibility to remix the soundtrack, due to the existance of the score in stereo), I've always thought the film would be a good candidate for an uncut, letterboxed 'Collectors Edition' DVD release. There should be enough Chaplin, Brando and Loren completists out there willing to buy it...
