One more interesting observation... I was comparing the scene in the DVD to the film where Charlie is reading over another soldier's shoulder as the guy reads a letter from home. Cue up the DVD and look in the background... am I hallucinating, or is that a guy in a straw hat in the background? If so, I'd be willing to bet the take on the DVD isn't even a serious take, but part of a rehearsal on film...

I checked out the David Shepard DVD of SA today. That looks like a helmet reflecting sunlight

It's amazing how often we see what we're looking for.
Take a look at the next few scenes, just after the 'This must be yours' intertitle. The same guy is in the background again, but out of the direct light. It looks like a helmet to me. Probably, the overhead diffuser didn't cover the far end of the trenches. Fire the cameraman!
