As an aside, there is another cd on the Basta label called THE GOLD RUSH & it is a new score for the film by Leonard von Goudoever. It is actually a very good score but I shudder at the liner notes: he says he had to redue the score because Chaplin's score 'is now outdated. Chaplin's film deserves better music than the composer Chaplin could provide.' Only one thing wrong with von Goudoever's version

It's also, pretty obviously, the product of an arrogant jackass. Now this is what I'd call Presumption, on a scale poor Carl Davis would never dream of!

Of the Chaplin music discs I've heard, 'Music by Charlie Chaplin' is my favorite. This is a 2 disc set featuring 'Oh That Cello' and another disc full of Chaplin's music played on cello. Many familiar songs, plus many non-film songs (like 'Oh That Cello', 'Peace Patrol' etc). This is BMG Psycho Records 74321-14076-2. My copy is made in Italy.

There's also 'Les Musiques Des Films de Charlie Chaplin.' (Vogue VG651) This is probably easier to find on vinyl than CD. Thiese are the Michel Villard arrangements, put out at the time Chaplin came to the U.S. for his Academy Award. Pretty straightforward, but I would not put this on for pleasure in lieu of the previous set.

Finally (at least on this shelf!) there's Carl Davis' recording of the score for City Lights (Silva America SSD1054). No, this isn't just a lift off the laserdisc, and is quite pleasant listening.
