I'm not sure whether this has been shared here yet, but the BFI are to release some essanay and mutual films this year in the UK.

Heres a link to volume 1 of the essanay set:

Sounds good to me!

This is potentially terrific news - BFI's DVD of 'Nosferatu' beats the hell out of the Image disc - which suggests they're doing their issues separately from Image's sources...

Anyone know more about this?

I found out about it last night. There's a small piece on the BFI's site and also on the DVDtimes site.

The BFI classic TV DVDs (BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas, Culloden, War Game etc.) have been really good value, so I'm hoping this will be just as good.

Doug, care to give details about the BFI/Image NOSFERATU differences? More footage? Better detail? More generous framing? How does the BFI compare with the Kino edition (the version recently released along with WAXWORKS, THE GOLEM, and THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI)? I believe I read that the Kino edition contains footage found in no other version, and is the most complete. Right now, all I have is the old Image laserdisc, and I'm trying to decide which of the countless DVD releases I should get. So far, it sounds like the Kino is the best bet.

A comparison of the Image and BFI discs can be found at:
http://dvdbeaver.com/

This includes screen shots which should make the differences very obvious. I haven't seen the Kino edition, so can't comment.

I also had trouble finding the silent version at first. It's just above the talking version, but the link is not in color so it doesn't stand out as well as the talkie version's link. Alan
