Hi All: Jodi and I have had a running battle concerning a scene in Limelight. Hopefully you guys will check this out and help me prove that I'm right!!
About 1 hour and 40 minutes into the film, Calvero is in a pub with his friends. He says something like 'Let's get some drinks, what's the matter with you?' He is then interupted by a man that Calvero dismisses by saying 'Have a drink, but have it at the other end of the bar'. He then turns back to his companions and says 'Come on... Keep it going.'
My wife (beautiful, sweet, but wrong about this...) says that CC is directing the actors by saying 'Keep it going.' It's my opinion that the line is part of the film and probably part of the original script, with Calvero urging his friends to keep the drinking going, not the acting. Jody points out that Jerry Epstein says that it's Charlie directing. I think that both Jerry and Jodi are mistaken. If you have a chance, take a peek at the scene and see what you think.
Thank you in advance for agreeing with me...

Hi Rick,
It's a tough call, but I'm siding with Jerry and Jodi. Jerry because he was probably there and Jodi because she is sooo beautiful and sweet. Also, he does seem to leave character for a brief moment when snapping his fingers.
Hope to see you two out this way soon!

I've always considered it part of the film. What may confuse the question is that Calvero the actor is using theatrical terminology, the same terminology that Chaplin the director might use.
