Hi guys,

Happy New Year! Nice to see everyone getting along lately. I just reviewed the Chaplin listings on eBay and saw that there is a poster for the Adventurer up for auction. It appears to be the one that was mass produced in the 70's (I think), but it's being described as an original poster printed in 1917. Please see the url

I guess the bids currently at only $160 tell the tale. Any opinions?

That certainly does sound like the ADVENTURER poster mass-produced in the sixties. Measurements sync up, too. I have a framed copy myself in my dining room. (Hell, it's *my* dining room.) It sold for about $2 new. My God, a real 1917 poster of THE ADVENTURER would be worth a bloody fortune!

I agree with Richard. The fact that the bottom edge is trimmed is suspicious...that's where the printing info is: Portal Publications, Sausalito, Cal. etc. Still it's interesting to know that my old poster is worth $160!! An original would be worth thousands.

Speaking of ebay frauds there's a CC autograph up for auction now that's totally fake. The title of the auction mispells the name as Charley and it carries no scan. I asked the vendor for a pic and received one. It's signed 'Charley Chaplin' and the signature isn't even close..

Has anyone e-mailed the seller, pointing out that the poster was reprinted in the 1970's (and frequently shows up on ebay, as a matter of fact)?

I would email the seller but I don't think it would do much good. Bidding on eBay is caveat emptor after all... I got fleeced myself purchasing a (beautiful) Phantom of the West poster thinking it was an original and that I was getting a great bargain at $75. Now whenever I look at it over my kitchen table (I like the idea of the Adventurer poster in the dining room, by the way!) I just sigh and think, well it's a nice repro anyway, and at least I didn't pay $1,200 for it!
