As I was making lunch today, I heard Nat King Cole singing Charlie's 'Smile'. I went to see in what context it was being used, and was confronted with images of football players plowing into one another (as they are apt to do). Wonder how Charlie would feel knowing his song was being used to advertise BYU (Brigham Young University) football? Or maybe he wouldn't care as long as the money was rolling in...

Leslie (wondering if Michael Jackson bought the rights to that song too, and is selling it all to hell)

How did Nat King Cole's singing 'Smile' come about anyway? Who composed the lyrics?

Does BYU know it's Charlie's music? Do Orrin Hatch and Robert Bennett know it's Charlie's music (sorry George, couldn't restrain myself <g>. It doesn't seem to me that 'Smile' is appropriate music for this ad ... are they advertising a videotape of the history of BYU quarterbacks or 1997 season tickets? Seems an odd combo, but I'll take it.

: >'Smile'. ... : : How did Nat King Cole's singing 'Smile' come about anyway? Who composed : the lyrics?

John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons composed the lyrics. I don't know who had the first hit with 'Smile', but it's been recorded many many times - I have a list (probably not complete) if anyone want's it. Cole recorded it it the Fifties, so I imagine he wasn't the first. Tony Bennett does a great version too.
