According to the motion picture academy Meredith Willson was nomintated for best original score for 'The Great Dictator'. According to David Robinson's bio Willson was the musical director, not the composer, who of course was Chaplin himself. Then how did Willson get the nomination?

That's a really good question, and I don't pretend to know the answer. Robinson describes Willson as Chaplin's 'musical collaborator,' which accurately describes the musicians who worked with him, since they did all the notation and undoubtedly had considerable influence on the arrangements. Still, it was Chaplin who supplied the basic tunes and musical ideas

Robinson discusses this on pp. 504-5 of _Chaplin: His Life and Art.'

Do you like the _Dictator_ score? It's never been one of Chaplin's more popular ones, but it suits the subject.
