From The Los Angeles Times (4-16-89): At age 9, Gloria DeHaven accidentally launched her acting career with a visit to the set of MODERN TIMES, where her father, Carter DeHaven, was assistant director. Chaplin needed two little girls to play Paulette Goddard's sisters. Gloria and her schoolmate were picked on the spot. 'Mr. Chaplin said, 'They're perfect.' All we would have to do was wear tattered clothes, eat bananas, and run away from a truant officer,' DeHaven says, laughing at the memory. They were sent to Western Costume for tattering, came back to the set and had a *marvelous* time.' Afterward, they were all invited to his house. She was stunned to discover that, out of costume and on the tennis court, the funny little tramp was an 'awesomely attractive man. He had a wonderful physique, tanned and very attractive. Then he came in and played the piano, told stories. There wasn't anything that he couldn't do. I was totally dazzled by him.' Richard Carnahan

Last year TCM had a short interview with Gloria DeHaven about CC in which she said pretty much the same thing. They showed a couple of home movie scenes of CC playing tennis and acting silly with Marion Davies. TCM did *not* mention her being in _Modern Times_ though

Ok, let's get to the real importance of the issue, did Charlie wait till Gloria turned 17 and do a Wham-Bam-Thank-You-Ma'am or not?

Well, I've had it confirmed (via a Mack Sennett biography) that 18 was the age of consent in California.

(the story was about an under-age bathing beauty at Sennett's who was going to tell the police that she was placed in an compromising position. Sennett took the entire Keystone crew down to Mexico, to await the legal charges. Mable's comment on being forced to go was 'Surely they don't think I did it!'

She named a grocer, and Keystone came happily back to the US,
