My question may have gotten lost in the other FN thread, so I thought I'd ask it again. A couple of the firms that are still in the business of making new 16mm prints list some of the FN films, including 'A Dog's Life,' Shoulder Arms,' and 'The Kid.' Does anyone know (or have a guess) the source of these prints? I am actually considering spending the money to buy one or more, but I'd be pretty upset if it turned out 'Dog's Life' and 'Shoulder Arms' came from 'The Chaplin Revue.' The four reel length listed for 'A Dog's Life' makes me wonder. It sure sounds stretch-printed.

Thanks,

Richard Ward

OK. So now I'm talking to myself. Thanks, Constance, for answering my inquiry on the earlier thread. There seems to be an awfully long lag time between posting and 'showing up.'

Anyhoo, is there any chance that Film Preservation Associates, which consistantly does top quality work, might release a good 16mm print of the original versions of any of the First Nationals?

Thanks,

Nope. My relationship with the Chaplin clan is important to me, and they wouldn't like it.

Sorry to hear that, but it is understandable. Thanks for continuing to make so many other films available on new 16mm prints. I'll be ordering 'The Goat' soon. Can't wait!

That's a shame. I wonder if the Chaplin Estate would actually approve of 16mm issues of the original prints - after all - only hard-core fans / collectors are going to buy the films on 16mm - and thus the material wouldn't really conflict with the 'mass market' editions prepared for the general public.

Well, hopefully someone else with original sources will take advantage of the desire for such things, and fill it.

It wouldn't take long for someone to convert these 16mm prints to DVD and VHS. Some of these First National titles are public domain anyway, so there would be no legal restrictions on releasing them. As for the copyrighted films, I'm sure some enterprising Hong Kong distributor would happily sell them on eBay.

Would you happen to know which of the First Nationals have fallen out of copyright?

Aren't all the First Nationals through THE KID PD now?

All the First Nationals should be PD by now. There could be some special edition stuff that is copyrighted, but I'm pretty sure the films' copyrights have lapsed.

I thought the cutoff was 1923, with everything earlier being PD. If that is the case all of the FNs except 'The Pilgrim' should be PD.

Of course, I'm no lawyer . . . .

The cutoff is the end of 1923. Everything produced in 1923 and before is now
