I just bought a film print of 'The Face on the Barroom Floor' from ebay. Unfortunately, it turns out to be an old Official Films copy, and while the picture quality is OK, the good folks at Official deleted practically all of the title cards, assuming, I guess, that Chaplin's antics needed no motivation. Anybody know how the title cards are supposed to read or, alternatively, know of a good source of the film on video? I'd like to rephotograph the titles and cut them into the print.

Hi, Richard I had the same idea a couple of years ago, but the cost of 16mm film and processing was prohibitive (to say the least!).

The title cards are all quotes from the poem, and can be found in the W.H. Productions reissue called 'Ham Artist,' which also presents the scenes in the correct order (more or less) and contains a shot that the Official Films omits.

On the other hand, 'Ham Artist' is not as complete as the Official films print, and doesn't look as good.

I've edited them together but, as I recently posted, I don't have a telecine, and the only way I can transfer 16mm is to shoot it off the wall, which not only looks lousy, but flickers like hell. Still, it'd be enough for you to get the titles and sequencing down. Contact me
