Certainly, yet it has been done by Horst Königstein for German TV as _Chaplins letzte Reise_ (Chaplin's Last Journey). It was handled as a semi-documentary, with news and TV footage combined with actors recreating whatever wasn't documented on film (such as the trial). This particular style that has become popular in some major excellent German TV productions (some of which involved Königstein) focussing on mostly policial topics ranging from 70s terrorism to German reunification and (soon the life of the Mann family. So rest assured it is usually much more subtle than, say, the way it is done in _Mysteries and Scandals_ .

I agree that the choice of subject matter is a bit odd here, and the result more played like a black comedy about the sheer dumbness of the body snatchers. However, there were also touching moments, such as the strength of Geraldine Chaplin, handling the phone calls standing in as Oona, or the farmer honoring Chaplin with a memorial sign on his temporary resting place.

Oh, I don't doubt that someone could do an entertaining human interest program on this episode. But it's sad to think that people who have never seen an entire Chaplin film might watch such a program out of sheer curiosity
