The silent version of THE GOLD RUSH has the 1925 score, played on piano.

I just bought the collection today and was a little dissappointed in the '42 video quality. Although rich in detail, sharpness and contrast depth, somewhere towards the end of the film (last reel?) a noticable vertical light streak of varying intensity runs down the screen at approximately 3/4 on the right side. I am surprised that this anomoly could not be corrected somewhat. The defect is not there in the '25 version, although the overall image quality of this version is not as

I just watched the last ten minutes of THE GOLD RUSH and saw no such 'anamoly'. Perhaps you have a bad disc.

'...specially accompanied on the piano by Neil Brand, using melodies from the film's original compilation score by Karli D. Elinor.'
That makes me think it's not the complete original score, but a new score based on the 1925 version.

That looks like Macrovision interference. Is your DVD player hooked up through your VCR? If so, that's the reason you're getting those dark and light frames.

My disc shows none of the flaring that your's does. I have a Sony DVP-660 player and a 31' Mitsubishi receiver/monitor.

Well, remember, a computer monitor is not what the dvd is designed to be shown on. The color balance, brightness, contrast, and resolution are not what you would have on a tv - just the black balance alone is totally different! Also, the quality of your video card comes into play - it's a real mess.
I played it on my computer, and saw the same thing - a big white streak. On my TV, it was much less noticable, but the old Image dvd hardly had it at all.
Hmm. The two dvd's really looked quite different, actually. I'll have to examine this a bit more.

Well, given the fact that no one has concurred with my findings, it most likely is a software glitch and should finally breakdown and enter the 21st century
