Yep. DS announced this a while back. It's a combination of his Essanay and Mutual sets plus the Eric Campbell docu. What I can't recall is if they're newly remastered.

As I recall, Mr. Shepard said they were from the same stampers as the other.

Not only are they NOT remastered, they are using the same pressing materials. The dvds were great in 99, but the compression technologgy has improved so much that they look a bit - well, digital grit comes to mind.

So, basically, you get the same Mutual and Essanay discs as before, plus the Campbell doc. A GREAT deal - if you don't already have those other discs!!

Is Chaplin's Goliath available separately on DVD?

Mutuals on the Shepard DVDs are missing footage that was intact either in the old silent 16mm Blackhawk Mutual prints and/or Mutual prints that have surfaced on French DVD. He says the almost 25% of ONE A.M. is missing from the Shepard DVD version. I don't have the Essanays yet, so I'm going to pick up the new set for those; I'm also going to directly compare the DVD Mutuals to the versions on my Republic laserdiscs, and see if there's any footage in the LDs that doesn't appear on the DVDs. I wonder if we'll ever see complete prints of the Mutuals.

First, the news that the current incarnations of the First Nationals are made from inferior takes. And now, this. A one-two punch of depressing

Yes- I remember the old Blackhawk silent version of ONE A.M., and there seemed to be quite a bit of stuff in the living room that isn't in the newer versions. I thought the reason could be that the Van Beuren version didn't have it, and thus, there was no musical/sound effects to accompany it. Or- to add in that footage would result in a big shift in quality.

Also- the old Blackhawk silent version of THE RINK was a Chaplin Classics reissue, and ended with a few shots that aren't in the current versions (including one where Charlie seems to fall down in the road).

To follow-up my previous post, here's what I remember about the old Blackhawk silent editions of the Mutuals (remember- it's been 30 years since I collected them).

THE ADVENTURER- had the Roy Import/Export Company titles. Was missing a bit from the party scene (Chaplin with Albert Austin).

THE COUNT- was the RKO/Van Beuren version (with the Chaplin caricature intertitles).

THE CURE- the worst of the old Blackhawk Mutuals- missing lots of footage, including the ending.

EASY STREET- I think was the RKO/Van Beuren version with Blackhawk's own titles added

THE FIREMAN- was the RKO/Van Beuren version with the Chaplin caricature intertitles.

THE FLOORWALKER- had the Roy Import/Export titles. The ending was cut a bit short.

THE IMMIGRANT- had the Roy Import/Export titles. Some bits were missing (like the shots of Chaplin and Edna looking at the Statue of Liberty). I think something was missing from the restaurant scene too.

ONE A.M.- I believe had the original Lone Star/Mutual titles- the only time I had ever seen them.

THE RINK- was the Chaplin Classics version (I remember the Chaplin Classics logo at the end). Think it had the Roy Import/Export style titles.

Don't remember what the old Blackhawk's of the other three were like.

Yes, but usually it seems to me that Mr. Shepard is pretty good about including inferior quality footage to make the most complete version
