I have an interesting book called 'Chapliniana - A commentary on Charlie Chaplin's 81 movies. Volume 1: The Keystone Films.'

This was written by Harry M. Geduld, and published in '87 by Indiana University Press.

My question is... did any further volumes ever appear? If not, does anyone know why not?

No further volumes ever appeared. I wrote to Prof. Geduld and he explained that he had completed the volume on the Essanay and Mutual films but had parted ways with the publisher after a dispute with them. I asked if it would be possible to purchase a photocopy of the mss. to the Essanay/Mutual volume and he declined to make it available.

I had often wondered why the series dried up after Vol. 1; it's too bad the Essanay/Mutual volume was never published under the imprint of another publisher. Seems like it would be a project tailor-made for McFarland or Scarecrow, assuming that the dispute with IUP you refer to didn't involve them retaining the rights to future volumes even if they declined to publish them.
