Hi,

That's at the end of the film, right? I came across that story some time back, but, unfortunately can't remember where I read it.

If Sturges wanted to use a Chaplin clip, he certainly could have lifted a PD clip of an early short. That's probably what would have been available to prisoners in the South in 1940 anyway.

Don't believe everything you read in newsgroups, Jim.

This sounds to me like another one of those 'Charlie killed and stuffed a cat,' or 'Russel Crowe threw a dead dog back into the audience' stories.

I was hoping for some sort of solid confirmation, but since I received none, I will believe the story is apocryphal.

That it didn't show up in any Chaplin or Sturges bio I have read is what made me skeptical.

And I thought Russell Crowe was the guy who bit the head off a bat at a rock concert.
