I watched a repeat of Ally McBeal last Monday and noticed that the song Rhonda Shepard was singing was 'This Is My Song,' AKA the theme from _Limelight_. How do musical copyrights work? Did she need permission to sing this song? It's amazing to me, the far reaching hand of Charles Spencer Chaplin.

_Limelight_.

Um, Deborah, that's the theme from _Countess From Hong Kong_, as a friend kindly pointed out to me.

I think that all producers needed to do was to pay the performance royalty. Which makes the Chaplin estate some bread everytime it is aired.
