Hey I just found an amazing site that is selling Chaplin style bowler hats. www.villagehatshop.com has all kind of speciality and mainstream hats, but specifically they have some great replica chaplin hats. Check it out its a great site.

I've checked out the site and I typed in the word DERBY for to find the Chaplin hats (bowler didn't work). A list appeared with a variety of different derbys, but they each had the same (!) derby pictured.

That being the case, (and I may be wrong) but I couldn't find a true Chaplin hat in the bunch.

Chaplin's hat is a type that I don't see anymore. Most of the derbys I see today have a brim that come up hard on both sides. Chaplin's derby had a brim that had the slightest rise on each side. Stan Laurel's hat was similar to Charlie's, although I think Stan's hat had an upturned brim but was essentially level all around.

Oliver Hardy's was more similar to the hats in the village hat shop.

Crooner,

Wow, I'm impressed with your knowledge of hats. You'd probably enjoy participating in the hat community bullitin board on www.villagehatshop.com. I'm a bit of a collector myself and a fan of chaplin's, so I'm grateful for your correction. I posted that thinking chaplin fans would be as interested in villagehatshop.com's bowlers and derbys as I am. They certainly are very similar if not replicas of Chaplin's trademark hat.

www.villagehatshop.com.

You might be interested to know how to make a Buster Keaton porkpie hat.

Take 1 Stetson hat, whose brimhas been cut down to size and whose top has been collapsed into form 3 heaping teaspoons granulated sugar 1 teacup warm water

Mix sugar and water. Wet the top and bottom of the brim. Smooth it out on a clean, hard surface. Allow to dry until stiff.

I've followed the above instructions and am quite pleased with the porkpie hat I made. It's great to take to Keaton festivals, but I always worry that some will snatch it off my head.
