The first version of the Chaplin FAQ is on my website.

It is *very* much a work-in-progress.

Check it out. Let me know what you think.

Some people have already given me feedback, which has been incorporated into the FAQ. I'm looking for more.

The URL is:

Considering how bad it might have been, it's fairly serviceable.

So far.

The statement:

<<In the 1930s and early 1940s, Chaplin held left-wing views that were in accordance with the views of many Americans of that time.>>

is inaccurate. The correct version ought to read:

<<In the 1930s and the early 1940s, Chaplin held left-wing views that were in accordance with the views of many in the American intelligentsia of that time.>>

Tom, I must say that this looks good.

Seems about as fair as one can get... and yet still leave in the name calling.

Keep up the good work.

Well, it's far from done.

Thanks. The FAQ has already been improved by the input of a few people.

What I'm interested in at this point is suggestions for further questions.

So don't be shy to e-mail me with further ideas and suggestions.

Gee, George, do you think you could restrain your enthusiasm?

It's a little embarrassing.

What makes you say that?

I have no intention of revising the FAQ to accomodate George's proposed revision, because I find it inaccurate.

You're absolutely right

Tom has repeatedly stated that he has no respect for my intelligence or my views, so I guess he just hasn't gotten around to cranking up a suitable insult this time. Maybe he's working on his website.

You examples are a mixed bag. Chaplin was philo-Soviet, which means he was admiring of a *non-democratic* left-wing philosophy.

Long was a populist whom many tarred with the brush of fascism.

Sinclair was a democratic socialist.

Yes, but how many were anti-democratic in their leanings?

  >* The San Francisco General Strike

Can't comment, I know nothing about this.

What was their percentage of the total vote?

He stayed hard left right into his 70s, where he praised Castro in an interview I cited from 'Ramparts' magazine.

It would be foolish to deny that left-wing views were held by many Americans during that period....but not *Chaplin-type* left-wing views.

I had no intention of asking you to do so. I don't expect you to deviate *that* far from your ideological predilections and acknowledge that Chaplin's penchant for praising dictators of the left

Not at all.

A number of people have suggested emendations to my FAQ, and some of those suggestions I have incorporated into the document. Others I haven't.

It has nothing to do with who suggests them. It has to do with whether I find the proposed emendation to be worthwhile or not.

George's proposal I happen to disagree with. It has nothing to do with George personally, so there's nothing to insult.

If George were to suggest something that I found sensible, I would have no qualms about putting it in the FAQ.

He hasn't done so yet. That doesn't mean he won't do so in the future.
