It seems the BFI's discs of the Chaplin Essanays are out soon. Does anyone which versions these will be? The running time would be in line with David Shepard's groundbreaking restorations, but it appears the films are on two double discs. In contrast, the previous European versions of David's Essanay restorations (i.e., the French arte discs and the German releases) were essentially identical as far as I know, and grouped much like the Image discs, with the occasional peripheral extra thrown in. Would there be any reason for the BFI to re-author them, or do they have versions of their own?

Thanks very much. The Keystone DVD is planned for spring 2009. There is still restoration work to do on the last few titles and then work will commence on the DVD itself. We will be including as many Keystone titles as survive, which I think is 34. There are no out-takes for the Keystones. The out takes only exist for Chaplin's later films. I hope there will be plenty of extras though. You are so right about the statue - I don't like it either. User's Organisation: Dear BFI, I greatly appreciate your Chaplin website it's one of the best in the world. Could you please give a period when we can expect the Keystones on DVD? How many DVD's will it be? Are there any outakes? All the best from the Netherlands from a great Chaplin lover, Johnny te Lintelo p.s. it's time for a new Chaplin statue in London. I saw the present one on the BBC it looked awful for world's greatest commedian.Perhaps on your website people could sign a petition. Thanks for all the good work. On youtube you can find some very interesting Chaplin material. I am looking very forward to this Keystone material. Last year on holiday in France they have quitte a lot of classic in every shop it felt great. Lobster is very active off course. A great comedian Harold Lloyd's 10 DVD has just been released in Germany amazon.co.de and in september the Netherlands and Belgium. He is also fantastic!
Chaplin's Keystone material is also included on Happy Slappy hard to find all greats from Keystone in the USA. In the rest of the world not to find, but they were so fantastic. In the 1980 they were for the last time on Dutch TV.

On silentcomedians.com my message was placed and now nearly 1100 people had read it. The ednapurviance.org and this website were the first to receive my email and placed it. There also news that BFI are working on the Essanay's set. Does anyone know what they intend to do with the material?

Tonight on Dutch TV a world war 2 filmmaterial from the Canadian forces it's surprising these days how good old black and white material can be made. It was excellent material from D-day until may 1945. I had to think of Modern Times which was shown after the war for the general public.
