In the section devoted to CC in Kevin Brownlow's _The Parade's Gone By_, Minta (Durfee) Arbuckle mentions that CC had an aversion to water. Yet I remember several scenes from his films where he was either immersed in water or was doused in some way (_City Lights_ come to mind for both of these). Knowing Chaplin's habit of doing take after take after take, it would seem that this is yet another Chaplin myth (like the one about his aversion to rubber). Are their any other sources that back up her statement?

Speculation on my part but maybe CC hated being doused with water or thrown into a pond at Keystone at the direction of others, like Henry Lehrman.
I've read a thousand times that he loved to swim. Next thing we'll hear is that he had an aversion to tennis rackets.

Anyone who claimed he had an aversion to water would have to explain why he enjoyed swimming in Doug Fairbanks' pool almost every day, and put in his own swimming pool (shaped like a derby) when he built the house on Summit Drive, why he showered and bathed at least daily, and had a steam room also, why he went out of his way to include scenes in his films which involved him jumping into water, as late as _City Lights_ and _Modern Times_. Yep
