Just thought it was time to list my CC CD's so that you may know what's out there. Don't think I have every CD, but I don't know of any CC CD that I don't have.

* CHARLIE! MUSIC FROM THE FILMS OF CC Munich Symphony Orchestra (Silva SSD 1021)

Not my favorite, possibly because CC's music is arranged in a different way than I'm accustomed to. However, it does contain the hauntingly beautiful LOVE SONG from THE FREAK; PEACE PATROL; THERE'S ALWAYS ONE YOU CAN'T FORGET and BEAUTIFUL WONDERFUL EYES (That was NEVER used in CITY LIGHTS).

* CHAPLIN Music from the Movie Soundtrack by John Barry (Epic EK 52986)

Not CC's music, except for excerpts, so I don't listen to it that often.

* OH! THAT CELLO Violoncello & Grand Piano (Zebra Acoustic ZA 44402-2)

Really good arrangements of CC's music; some of which are soulful & somber. Does justice to CC's music. Plus, it contains all of CC's early, seldom-heard music, including OH! THAT CELLO.

* THE GOLD RUSH by the Max Tak Orchestra (Basta 30-90502)

No, CC didn't compose this music but it IS very good music. Composer Leonard Van Goudoever uses snatches of music from Gerswhin, Verdi & others. Without making a comparison between this & CC's music (because it just doesn't have the Chaplinesque touch), I think, this music would anyhow greatly enhance a GOLD RUSH screening. If it's not as good as CC's, then it's the second best.

* THE CHAPLIN REVUE (Decca MVCM-22067)

This is simply CC's background music without CC's narration. Rare find; Expensive; Import from Japan.

* CC THE FILM MUSIC by Carl Davis (BGM Music 09026 68271 2)

A great treat. I prefer these new recordings over the audio tape recordings I made in the theaters when I was a kid. I only wish THE KID selections were longer. Selections from MODERN TIMES is also somewhat slower paced than CC had done it originally.

* AMERICAN MUSIC OF THE STAGE & SCREEN by Alice Artzt Guitar Trio (Bay Cities BCD 1042)

Very good arrangement of CC music. This trio of guitars faithfully reproduces the Chaplinesque touch from various movies PILGRIM, DOG'S LIFE, COUNTESS, CIRCUS & the rare WITH YOU DEAR IN BOMBAY.

* MUSIC FROM THE FILMS OF CC Orchestrated by Michel Villard (Vogue VG651 600009)

My least favorite CC music CD, due to the arrangement & orchestration.

* THE MUSIC OF CC Vol 1 THE SILENT MOVIES (Blue Moon BMCD 7002)

* THE MUSIC OF CC Vol 2 THE TALKIES (Blue Moon BMCD 7003)

These two CD's from Spain are simply recordings (unenhanced) from various CC movies (first CD: DAY'S PLEASURE, PAY DAY, GOLD RUSH, CIRCUS & second: CITY LIGHTS, MODERN TIMES, DICTATOR & LIMELIGHT.) The best thing about volume 2 is the recordings of CC's songs from MODERN TIMES & LIMELIGHT.

* CITY LIGHTS by Carl Davis (Silva FILMCD 078)

Really great & faithful rendition of CC's music. We can finally hear the soundtrack the way Henry Bergman heard it.

* HOLLYWOOD SINGS (Pro-Arte CDD 509)

A selection of 20 artists who performed songs in their careers. Includes Rudolph Valentino's pitiable Spanish-language song; Bob Hope's THANKS FOR THE MEMORY; Orson Welles YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU; Charlie Chaplin's SING A SONG with the Abe Lyman Orchestra (Charlie is guest conductor & also plays the first violin) & Jackie Coogan & his father in a vaudeville sketch, 1928 (which is quite funny). Coogan also comments on his indebtedness to CC.

* MUSIC IN PARIS IN THE 1920s includes Darius Milhaud's LE BOEUF SUR LE TOIT (VOX ALLEGRETTO ACD 8157)

Finally, the music that Milhaud composed with the assurance that it would fit ANY CC film.

That's it for now. If you have any to add, I'd sure like to know about them.

Those are the two that I own as well, Sean. From the looks of Crooner's list, I am remiss in my searching out Chaplin music. I especially look forward to getting one with music from _The Kid_ on it. Thanks for the list, Crooner.

hello!

Thanks for posting this!!

I think there was a follow-up CD to this, with more Chaplin music played by T. Beckmann and this time, I think, his wife. It might have been unavailable in the States. BTW the duo also toured Germany, when the CD came out, with a print of THE VAGABOND. I think they had done a very good job of compiling a score for this one, using, I recall, THERE'S ALWAYS ONE YOU CAN'T FORGET as theme song for Edna's mom. I also recall being pretty disappointed at the print they used (a battered 16 or 8mm copy), though...

Uli, do you have any info about this other CD? Manufacturer's name & id number? And where it can be purchased?

I have this CD also - what Love Song from The Freak? How could there be a song from a movie that was never made - I'll have to take a look at that again - I just listened to it today.

LIGHTS).

Chaplin it seemed, on occasion, would write the music to a film BEFORE the film itself. As he did with THE FREAK & LIMELIGHT.

Quoting from Robert Parrish GROWING UP IN HOLLYWOOD (p 56):

'On another occasion, he asked me and my wife to his studio to hear the musical score he had written for LIMELIGHT. He hadn't actually shot the film yet, but he had written and recorded the music four times, this last time with a sixty-piece orchestra. As the music played, he acted out each scene as he proposed to do it when he shot the film. It was a wonderful performance, well over an hour. When it was over, I hesitatingly suggested that the usual form was to make the picture first and then record the music to the picture. 'Don't be ridiculous,' he said, 'I wouldn't think of trusting any conductor with my performance.''

We are of like minds, Deborah. I am most anxious to find the score to The Kid as well.

Thanks for the CD list. I have all the CC ones except the Blue Moon, which I listened to in the store and didn't buy. For those who are still LP compatible. I'd add the soundtrack recordings of 'Modern Times' and 'Countess from Hong Kong'. ΓΏ I'm pretty sure you can still get copies of these. A number of years back I was quoted $25 for a new, shrinkwrapped MT by A1 Records in So. Cal. Not sure if they still exist.
