Could it be that what WB is billing as 'original silent' is instead the David Shepard versions that were issue previously? I find it difficult to believe the Chaplin estate has suddenly found the original versions of the First National films.

Fairly spartan and business-like. Not what I would have expected.

Well, a visit to the Chaplin estate website confirms that Charlie has really arrived. Not only a great commedian and filmmaker, he is now a registered trademark and service mark as well.

So, a question I asked once before: Can one who publicly shows a PD film featuring a 'trademarked' actor be busted for trademark infringement? If so, the whole business before the Supreme Court seems pretty irrelevant.
