On Sunday, I was at Film Forum in NYC to watch a bunch of Chaplin shorts and other mostly inferior shorts featuring Chaplin imitators. At any rate, they were showing these films as a part of their Great American Comedy film festival. The guy who put the festival together said that he wanted to show Chaplin features as a part of the festival. However, he said that he wasn't able to do so because he could not obtain the permission from the Chaplin family to show them and that the Chaplin family is planning to re-release them next year. I don't understand why the Chaplin family decided that 2003 would be a good year to re-release all those great Chaplin features. Does anyone have an explanation as to why they are waiting until 2003? Why would they not want to show those great movies in the theaters now?

Well, it's certainly a marketing strategy. If the films are shown too often they won't attract andiences, and if they aren't shown often enough, people will forget about Chaplin, so the logical strategy is to find some optimal spacing for the releases.
