I have two questions for the newsgroup.

How did the tradition of calling actors by their real first names on screen start, and when did it end?

Since Chaplin arrived in the us with his comedy chops already pretty well honed, I would like to learn much detail about his earlier life (before hollywood). I am mainly interested in his professional experience, but also about his private life, e.g., girlfriends, defining moments, etc. Much of what I read is always preceded by, *It is believed*, *One would think*, etc, like they don't really know for sure. Are there any authoratative works that have documented this part of his life?

The practice started early in film history, but wasn't universal.
